Quality assurance

Assessment is governed by the Institute's Assessment, Moderation and Examination policies. Teaching, learning and assessment are planned together, and NQF level descriptors are used to ensure that learning is assessed at the correct level. Every module has an assessment plan for the semester, setting out the assessment activities, their weighting and how feedback is given; it is explained to students at the start. Continuous assessment counts for 50% of the module mark and the final summative examination for 50%. All summative assessment is moderated, and all exit-level modules are externally moderated.

Work-Integrated Learning is assessed in cooperation between the Institute, the subject lecturers and the mentor pastors who supervise students in the congregation, with lecturers visiting congregations to evaluate the work. The Programme Coordinator is responsible for quality control across the assessment process.

Moderation runs as a closed loop: the lecturer aligns the task and the marking guide, a pre-moderator checks level, fairness, language and weighting, the assessment is written and marked, a post-moderator reviews a purposeful sample across the range of performance, an external reviewer checks the exit-level standard, and the committee approves the resulting improvements.
